Chocolate mousse

Was at a french brasserie-type restaurant the other day and, although I rarely order dessert, decided to order a bit of chocolate mousse to round out a pretty delicious meal. It arrived and it looked like this:

Forgive me for posting this picture, but I was really just so taken aback by the presentation, I had to take a few photos. Surely someone in the kitchen was feeling a bit disgruntled that evening – that is the only explanation I can come up with. Anyway, after the third photo (I wanted to make sure that my mobile phone was capturing both the colour and texture), LY pointed out that I was probably making too much of a scene by relentlessly photographing the dessert as if it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen.

Once getting beyond the uncanny resemblance to matter not usually found on bone china, it was actually really delicious. They just need to work a bit on the presentation: WHY a plate, and what’s with the little brown flecks of chocolate all over?

The funny thing is that, at brunch 2 weeks ago, LY ordered a piece of what she described quite literally as “the most beautiful cake” she’d ever seen, but it turned out to be a sickeningly sweet meringue concoction that none of us at the table could actually consume…
